So many writers try to write down their ideas. It's like trying to make wine from a bunch of grapes by squeezing the juice into a glass. – Larry Brooks Why doesn't an idea make a story ? When a writer says he had an idea for a story, what did he actually have? I would like to make a comparison, at least based on my experience, with writing for the web. When I have an idea for a post, that idea doesn't always become an article. With over 80 ideas that I have marked on a file, I continue to look for other ideas day by day, because those don't completely convince me. Sure, I could force myself to squeeze out those ideas - to refer to Larry's simile - and come up with a post, but would it really be a useful post for readers? In my opinion, it's not enough to have an idea, but you need to have a strong idea . What is an idea for a story As I always say, ideas for stories and novels come to me in the form of titles. But they don't always work.
Over time I realized that I shouldn't Special Data trust those titles very much. A title, after all, is just a sentence, it hides nothing inside itself. There are only two novels – one begun and the other still at the plot level – that did not begin as titles: K and PU. Those who have been following the blog for some time have already known these "stories". Even though I'm still on the high seas (I'm not a good sailor...), those two stories continue to fascinate me. Even the book on blogging that I talked about some time ago was not born as a title and in fact it seemed like a good idea to me, so much so that I decided to write it immediately. This is the difference between an idea and a strong idea.
Be careful, though: it's just the author's opinion. Whether it then becomes a published book is another matter. The idea is the illusion that we have come up with a story to write, but in reality it is just a thought that could very well die without making anyone suffer. What is not a story idea Definitely not a title . K already has the title, but he didn't have it at the beginning, in fact it changed two or three times. PU on the other hand won't be PU and I still can't find a suitable title for that story. The last story published on the blog was not born as a title. An idea is not a plot . When we have written a plot, we are almost halfway there, because that is where the story is contained. The development of the plot becomes a novel. An idea doesn't make us understand whether the story works or not. More is needed to reach that awareness (always through the eyes of the author).
